Kevin-SpaceyIn all seriousness, the show wasn’t too bad, despite the fact that Neil Patrick Harris was basically shoved down our throats for three hours (is anyone else just over the NPH thing?). A few highlights:

-Kevin Spacey’s House of Cards-style monologue. Nuff said.

-Merritt Weaver wins the trophy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy. She was completely caught off guard, said “thank you” a few times, then uttered: “I gotta go…bye!” It was adorable and amazing, and hopefully puts a little more attention onto the fantastic Nurse Jackie.

-Tina and Amy. From sitting in the audience with 3D glasses, to tripping up the stairs JLaw style, to Tina telling her writing partner after their win: ”No one said you could talk Tracey,” these ladies have proven time and time again that they are crowd-pleasing entertainers. I hope they continue popping up at every award’s show from here until the end of time….said everyone ever.

-Julia-Louis Dreyfus accepted her award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy in true Selina Meyer fashion – with “Gary” (Tony Hale) by her side, holding her handbag and feeding her lines. It was a great reminder of why Veep works.

-Clare Danes unsurprisingly won again for Homeland, but it was her tribute to the late Henry Bromell (a screenwriter who won a posthumous Emmy for Season 2’s “Q&A”) that proved that Danes was all class. She let Bromell’s memory shine and spoke about how important he was on set day-to-day. It was a touching way to spend her time at the podium.

-I get that The Newsroom isn’t perfect – it has its critics and its flaws – but I was glad to see Jeff Daniels take the prize for his role as Will McAvoy. That show consistently entertains me, and despite its Sorkinness, I’m still a huge fan.

And a few lows:

-Again…over NPH and his musical numbers. I can’t be the only one.

Modern Family beats way better comedies once again. Over Louie and 30 Rock and Veep? Ugh.

-Jim Parsons wins for the 11 billionth time. I just can’t even get started on The Big Bang Theory. If you know anyone that likes this show, send them my way. I’ve never actually met a Big Bang Theory fan in the flesh.

-The musical numbers. Sure, Carrie Underwood sounded pretty OK, and Elton John is Elton John, but they dragged the show down. Had I not been watching Live, I would’ve hit the forward button.

-Jessica Lange (and American Horror Story: Asylum) loses.  I mean…didn’t Emmy votes SEE AHS: Asylum!?

What was your greatest surprise of the night?
