Music Monday: Courtney Barnett – ‘The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas’

Courtney-Barnett-The-Double-EP-A-Sea-Of-Split-Peas-608x608So I know I’m all “Firefly Firefly Firefly” like Jan Brady is all “Marcia Marcia Marcia,” but I can’t help it. Each year, after the line-up is announced, my friends and I attack it like sharks on meat, and every year, we’re turned on to some pretty cool shit. So in my quest this year to hear it all, I have found my new favorite album: Courtney Barnett’s The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas.

Barnett is a singer-songwriter and guitarist from Australia, generally known for her rambling lyrics and deadpan singing style. The disc was released in late November 2013, though she attracted attention from the US and UK press in October due to a couple of well-received performances at CMJ.

The Double EP reminds me of early Liz Phair, yet when I tweeted Barnett that, she responded that she hadn’t even heard Phair (crazy!). But Barnett’s wit might even top Phair’s. The songs are just as chill; the songwriting is top-notch, musically and lyrically. I love the piano in tracks like “Out of the Woodwork;” all around, the instrumentation is nicely pieced together and always a bit loose and jammy in all the right spots. It’s a winner record front to back – one of those albums that I can’t say enough about ‘cuz it’s that in my head.  Check some of it out below:
