How Can I Possibly Take ‘Rocky’ Seriously?

So not only did the Academy grace this movie with the Best Picture trophy in 1976, but it actually nominated Sly Stallone for Best Actor? And Best Original Screenplay? With ten total nominations, Rocky was the contender to knock-out that year and ended up taking home three wins at the end of the night. But….why!?

I definitely viewed this with a pessimistic eye. First of all, (I know, I know!) I can’t believe I haven’t seen it. So maybe it’s my own fault. There have been countless parodies of the famous Rocky-climbs-the-steps scene. From The Simpsons and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air to films like The Nutty Professor and You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, the movie has been somewhat beaten with an ugly stick. This alone makes it hard to take  seriously.

Can we talk about those accents, too? Those silly, silly accents! Sylvester Stallone just isn’t my favorite (is he anybody’s favorite!?). In my book, it might as well have been Steven Segal playing Rocky. I guess that’s a pretty rough thing to say, but by movie’s end, I just wanted everybody to shut the fuck up and stop talking.

How in the world are there six movies to this series? Thank God none of the sequels mustered up enough Academy support or I’d really be in trouble.

Next Up:  I don’t know! I need suggestions for radical awesome movies to target. Holler at me.
