‘You’re the Worst’ is Ending and I Am Very Sad

FX has officially announced that You’re the Worst has been renewed for its fifth—but final—season. I am v sad.

“Making You’re The Worst has been an incredible experience and FX Networks have been dream partners,” said creator Stephen Falk. “I am thankful to have the opportunity to be thoroughly judged whether or not we ‘stick the landing’ — which is a thing people say now that stupid Breaking Bad had to end so damn perfectly.”

Falk’s story about the worst human beings ever centers around the rocky relationship between its two leads, Jimmy and Gretchen. Season 4 found the two broken apart and spiraling downward faster than ever, which led to things like crack smoking and erotica conventions, which for YTW is pretty much par for the course.

FX’s comments make the break-up seem mutual: “Stephen Falk has been an extraordinary creative partner to work with over the past four years, and it is in that spirit that we came to the mutual decision to end You’re the Worst with its fifth season,” said FX programing president Nick Grad. “Stephen’s singular vision for the series has been its guiding force from the start and our decision, while difficult, will allow the series to end on its own terms and in a way most satisfying to its devoted fans.”

Aya Cash had this to say on Instagram:

Although You’re the Worst never quite mirrored real life (How does Gretchen never get fired? How does Jimmy have any friends whatsoever?), it always bolstered its crazy by giving its characters reasons for their faults. It dug into the psyches of these sociopaths and made us sympathize with them in ways that felt honest, keeping the insanity it dished out every week grounded. While I’m not ready to say goodbye, I’m glad we have a final season on order, so we can learn to let go. Cue the Boyz II Men track.
