Pixies New ‘Um Chagga Lagga’ is Better Than All of ‘Indie Cindy’

PixiesAlthough Pixies have been playing “Um Chagga Lagga” for over a year now, the track has finally seen the (official) light of day.

With the band’s sixth album Head Carrier announced (September 30 on Pixiesmusic/Play It Again Sam), “Um Chagga Lagga” brings back a bit of Pixies that was seemingly lost on their first Kim Deal-less album, Indie Cindy: crunchy guitars, frenetic energy, and lyrics only Black Francis could ever figure out. (Newish bassist Paz Lenchantin’s backing vocals really fit in well here, too; it’ll be interesting to hear how she fits into this puzzle when Head Carrier hits.)

It’s not that I disliked Indie, the band’s fifth record that combined 3 EPs and mushed ’em together to formulate a full studio album; it’s just that it felt like separate sessions, and didn’t feel as edgy and progressive as Pixies usually are. But “Um Chagga Lagga” really is their best song in years, and with a new album on the horizon, this is good. Very good.
