Look, there’s been a ton of reboots, remakes, reimaginings and revivals lately, so I know your patience for this bullshit is running thin. But nostalgia is alive and thriving and Disney cartoons are not immune to the revival treatment. But if there’s one series I’m glad to see back in action it’s motherfucking Scrooge McDuck and his rascal-y nephews Huey, Louie and Dewey. That’s right, kids: DuckTales is back!
In the late ’80s, DuckTales ran for four seasons and 100 episodes, and spawned one of my favorite 8-bit games ever. Disney XD has revived the series, except this time, David Tennant (Doctor Who) voices the thrifty, Scottish bird (A duck is a bird, but it feels weird to call Scrooge a bird. Maybe we call him a mallard? “Thrifty, Scottish mallard?” That sort of makes more sense? I don’t know the biological aspects of what makes a mallard a bird, but I really only came here to write about a cartoon show.) So, hooray for Tennant fans.
Also on board are Danny Pudi (Huey), Ben Schwartz (Dewey), Bobby Moynihan (Louie), and Kate Micucci (Webbigail Vanderquack)! They’ve nailed down a cast full of relevant funny people who can certainly help fly these quacks into the here and now. In the reboot, they each have distinct personalities—Huey is a charming troublemaker, Dewey is a bit more restrained, and Louie plays a chip off the ol’ block, inheriting some minor greed from his Great Uncle Scrooge (Louie’s gonna have to start practicing his diving skillz!).
The series debuted this weekend and the premiere is now available to watch on YouTube for free. In the first episode, Donald Duck takes Huey, Dewey, and Louie to Scrooge McDuck’s mansion where they uncover family secrets, leading to an epic road trip to the Lost City of Atlantis. Check it out below! After that, you’ll have to wait for the rest of the season to air, starting Sept. 23rd!
