Cult Film In the Making: ‘Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale’

This little fucking gem has almost left me speechless. Almost.

I got this beauty as a Christmas present from my friend Aaron. After introducing our gang of misfits to The Room and knowing that we’re into the cult/horror thing, he figured it would be a great gift for my ladyfriend and I to get into. Man, he was so right.

Our gift giver had no idea if the movie was a Black Comedy or a Horror film. Action movie? Satire? We had zero expectations and not a clue in hell as to what we were getting into. Just a large, mysterious pool of cult-y goodness in which we dove head first into.

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale is a Finnish film released in late 2010 that has just received Blu-ray treatment in the U.S. with its release October 25. The film follows a group of reindeer herders whose business is interrupted when an excavation team makes a shocking discovery high up in the mountains. After their reindeer are brutally slaughtered and local supplies and children start to disappear, the townsfolk begin to worry that the legendary Santa Claus has returned from the grave…to shred naughty children to pieces and make them pay for their bad behavior!

Written and directed by Jalmari Helander, the film walks as batshit-crazy-a-tightrope as it sounds. Santa Claus is a legend, but he is feared amongst the people. The parents know things. Secrets they avoid sharing with their children. But what did those scientists find? And are we supposed to be laughing!?

Rare Exports made me feel slightly uncomfortable. Between furious bouts of nervous laughter, I was also somewhat creeped out (just wait until you see Santa’s elves!). Despite said feelings of uneasiness, what lies beneath was actually a really well-done film with great cinematography (it looked fantastic on Blu-ray) and an edgy, unique tale that turns Christmas completely upside down. It’s a neo-classic for those sick of holiday cheer and the usual seasonal film fare – a brand new, entirely fucked up holiday tradition to partake in from here on out.

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale could very well be one of the best cult films of our time…with the right word of mouth. So see this movie, dammit. Then, spread the word to 10 of the sickest, most demented and sarcastic of your degenerate friends. There truly is so much to celebrate during the holidays.
